The 2025 Abstract Paintings

My series ‘The Salt of the Earth’ is dedicated to a substance that is essential to our lives and, at the same time, reveals a fascinating aesthetic diversity. Salt is a unique substance that constantly forms everywhere on earth, whether underground or on the surface. I am particularly fascinated by the beguilingly beautiful colours created during salt extraction in the most diverse places in the world.

On the west coast of Australia, by the Useless Loop, the salt ponds glow in brilliant shades of blue and turquoise. In the Camargue, on the Mediterranean in France, the salt ponds change colour throughout the year: In spring, they show a delicate pink, which matures to a deep salmon colour in autumn, thanks to the algae Salina Dunaliella. This algae not only colours the water but also the crayfish and penguins that live there

In the USA, at the Great Salt Lakes in Utah, the colour spectrum ranges from shades of pink to deep dark purple. In Senegal, shades of brown and ochre dominate, while salt ponds shimmer in pure gold in India. This blaze of colour is a work of art created by nature and humankind working together.

Salt flows through our tears and blood, connects the oceans, and is essential for survival. This vital substance inspires me profoundly, and my works are a tribute to the fascinating power of nature.

Salt Works

Here, abstraction becomes alchemy, where color, structure, and silence converge. A radiant field of deep orange rises like heat from the earth—glowing and raw at once. It is neither sun nor fire nor mineral, yet it carries something of each. Around this center, layers of brown, pink, and pale white settle like sediments, as if the canvas itself had crystallized from the slow evaporation of time.

The cracked surfaces recall salt flats beneath a burning sky. They speak of the retreat of water and the traces left behind as silent witnesses. Fragile yet enduring, these fissures resemble scars—maps without borders, geological memories inscribed into the very skin of the painting.

Salt Works does not depict a landscape; it summons one: shimmering air, distorting heat, a silence that feels like eternity. The white crystalline edges seem to form before the eyes, fragile yet lasting. The work thrives on contrasts—warmth and coolness, fragility and strength, dissolution and emergence. It is both still and alive, like a desert at noon or a coastline where the sea has withdrawn.

Abstraction does not mean the removal of reality, but its condensation. In Skógafoss, a landscape unfolds that needs no precise form to be recognized. The colors carry the weight of experience: the fiery glow of rust-red and ochre, reminiscent of earthy layers and volcanic rock, meets the cool blue of an endless sky where water in motion can be imagined. A tension arises between warmth and coolness, between grounding and lightness, drawing the viewer into an inner balance.

The fractured texture of the surface speaks of time, of transformation, of the unstoppable forces that shape nature. Cracks appear like traces of memory, as if the painting itself had endured centuries. It is as though the moment of a waterfall’s descent were captured in color without being shown—a memory of movement, suspended yet vibrating with energy.

Abstract art thrives in this space between suggestion and perception. Skógafoss does not depict the waterfall, it evokes it. The eye finds no concrete shape, yet within the heart an image arises: the roar, the spray, the light transforming airborne droplets into rainbow hues. The painting generates this inner resonance, inviting the viewer to discover their own landscape, their own story within the layers of color.

Thus, Skógafoss becomes a dialogue between work and perception. A piece that dissolves the boundaries between natural experience and inner emotion—powerful, fragile, and endlessly open to new interpretations.
